In his studio in the Languedoc John Townsend creates textured "sandscapes" using rich Provençal ochres, acrylic colours, finely ground sand, marble dust and a variety of other materials.

As an inquisitive traveller, John has always been drawn to the wild empty spaces at the ends of the earth where he has tried to capture the atmosphere of stark silhouetted horizons through music and film, sketches and watercolours

Inspired by the ochre tones of the warm Languedoc stonework and the colours of distant windswept islands, John's "sandscape" paintings are as much a reflection of his journeys to the lonely places of the planet where nature still has her soul as they are an echo of the music which accompanies him.
